Choosing childcare can feel overwhelming. Every centre promises caring educators, engaging programs and welcoming environments… but how can you tell what daily life is really like?
Reviews can be a helpful place to start. They offer a glimpse into the experiences of families who already know the centre, its educators and its routines.
At Sparrow Early Learning, we encourage families to read what others have shared, research their options and then experience the centre for themselves.
Look for patterns, not perfection
One review reflects one family’s experience. Similar comments appearing across multiple reviews can reveal more about a centre’s everyday culture.
Look for repeated mentions of:
- Warm, welcoming educators
- Support during the settling-in period
- Clear communication
- Educators who genuinely know each child
- Familiar and consistent team members
- Children who enjoy attending
The most useful reviews often include specific examples. A comment about how an educator comforted a child at drop-off tells you more than a review that simply says “great centre”.
The ACCC advises that genuine reviews should reflect the independent opinion of someone who used the service. It also recommends considering the number of reviews behind the star rating and being cautious of vague reviews or many reviews written in very similar language.
Look beyond Google
Reviews are only one part of your research. Every approved Australian early learning service is assessed against the National Quality Standard and receives a quality rating. Families can view these ratings through our websites centre pages or StartingBlocks and compare how services perform across seven areas of quality.
Then, book a tour or arrange a Stay and Play.
A Sparrow tour gives your family time to meet the centre leadership and educators, explore the learning environments and ask about routines, communication, wellbeing and school readiness. Tours generally run for 30–45 minutes, and families are encouraged to bring their child along.
A Stay and Play gives your child another opportunity to spend time in the centre, become familiar with the environment and begin building relationships with their educators before their first day.
