Every Conversation Matters: Shifting Conversation to Action
Sometimes an important conversation starts with a big question.
Sometimes it starts with a child telling us something unexpected.
And sometimes it begins simply because an educator or parent notices that something feels different.
This National Child Protection Week, 6–12 September 2026, the theme is “Every Conversation Matters: Shifting Conversation to Action.” It’s an important reminder that conversations about children’s safety should not only happen when something has gone wrong.
They belong in our everyday interactions with children, families, educators and communities.
For young children, having a voice doesn’t always mean sitting down and having a serious conversation.
Children communicate in many different ways.
Through the words they use. The questions they ask. Their behaviour. Their play. Their emotions. The people they seek out, and sometimes the things they don’t say at all.
That’s why listening is such an important part of creating a child-safe environment.
At Sparrow Early Learning, we want children to know that their thoughts, feelings and boundaries matter.
That means encouraging children to express themselves, respecting their voices and creating relationships where they feel comfortable approaching trusted adults.
NAPCAN’s 2026 campaign goes one step further: conversations matter, but meaningful change happens when they lead to action.
In an early learning setting, that can mean asking questions when something doesn’t feel right. Reviewing a practice instead of assuming “that’s how we’ve always done it”. Continuing professional learning. Sharing information with families. Listening carefully to children. Raising a concern rather than leaving it unsaid.
Sometimes action is big.
Often, it’s found in the decisions we make every day.
Creating environments where children are safe, supported, respected and heard takes all of us.
Educators and leaders have important responsibilities, but families are an essential part of the conversation too.
We encourage Sparrow families to ask us questions about child safety. Ask about our practices. Talk to your child’s educators. Tell us what matters to your family. And if something is worrying you, please speak with us.
We would always rather have the conversation.
Because strong child-safe cultures aren’t created by one policy, one training session or one week in September.
They are created through what we notice, discuss, question, learn and do next.
