When families think about school readiness, letters, numbers and writing names often come to mind. These skills matter, but being ready for school involves much more. Children also need growing confidence to communicate, manage emotions, follow routines, make decisions, work with others and try unfamiliar experiences.
The latest Australian Early Development Census found that the proportion of children considered developmentally vulnerable in at least one area increased from 22% in 2021 to 23.5% in 2024. The results reinforce the importance of investing in children’s learning, wellbeing and development during the early years.
What school readiness really looks like
A child preparing for school may be learning to:
- Express their needs and ideas
- Manage frustration and big feelings
- Listen and participate in a group
- Form friendships and resolve small disagreements
- Look after their belongings
- Follow familiar routines
- Make choices independently
- Stay curious when something feels difficult
School readiness is not about turning early childhood into school before school. It is about giving children the foundations they need to approach their next chapter with confidence.
How Sparrow prepares children
Sparrow’s kindergarten programs build these skills through play, inquiry and real experiences.
Children develop early literacy and numeracy through storytelling, conversations, symbols, mark-making, patterns, measurement, building and problem-solving. Play also creates opportunities to collaborate, make decisions, communicate ideas and persist with challenges.
Throughout the day, children practise self-help and independence through meaningful routines. They might serve food, pour a drink, help with transitions, care for their belongings or contribute to decisions about their environment.
The aim is not to rush childhood. It is to help children become capable, curious and confident learners while still giving them the freedom to play, explore and wonder.
Knowing the alphabet is useful. Knowing that you can ask for help, make a friend and keep trying is just as important.
