Our child safety framework
At Sparrow, safeguarding is not just a system – it is a culture.
Safeguarding the Sparrow Way is about safety, respect, protection and genuine care every day, in every interaction, for every child.
Our safeguarding approach is built around seven core priorities – Supervision, Prevention, Awareness, Responsibility, Respect, Observation, and Well-being.
Together, these priorities guide how we think, act, decide and respond in our work with children. They form the foundation of safe practice across all Sparrow services and outline what it means to uphold our duty of care with integrity, awareness, and consistency.
What matters most to us
Active supervision is our first and strongest safeguard. Educators minimise distractions and position themselves where children can be seen/heard and always supported. Supervision is intentional - we anticipate risks, we scan, we respond, and we consistently adjust our environment and practice to ensure every child is safe.
Prevention means identifying hazards early, addressing risks before they escalate, and creating environments that support children’s safety and wellbeing. Educators are proactive - they stay present, maintain situational awareness, and take steps to eliminate or reduce risks in the moment. Our goal is to prevent incidents by designing safer spaces, routines, and experiences.
Awareness includes knowing our safeguarding responsibilities, recognising signs of harm and abuse, understanding procedures and emergency response, and staying informed about potential risks. It also means supporting children to develop their own awareness of personal safety in age-appropriate, empowering ways that build confidence and self-advocacy.
Responsibility reflects our duty of care and the shared accountability all team members have for maintaining safe environments. At Sparrow, every educator - regardless of role - is responsible for speaking up, acting quickly, and following procedures that protect children. We also nurture children’s sense of responsibility for themselves and others by understanding their right to consent and agency.
Respect shapes how we interact with children, families, colleagues, and the environment. We model respectful behaviour, uphold children’s rights, and create spaces where children feel safe, valued, and heard. Respect for safety rules, personal boundaries, and shared spaces strengthens children’s trust and contributes to a positive and protective culture.
Observation is more than watching - it’s understanding. Educators intentionally observe children’s behaviour, emerging risks, environmental changes, and moments that may signal discomfort, conflict, or emotional needs. By noticing early, we can respond early. Observation helps us adapt our supervision, guide children’s behaviour, and prevent incidents.
Safeguarding includes emotional, physical, and psychological wellbeing. At Sparrow, we prioritise warm relationships, secure attachments, predictable routines, and inclusive environments where every child feels a sense of belonging. Well-being also means supporting educators, because when educators feel safe and valued, they create safer worlds for children.

Putting safety first
At Sparrow, safeguarding and child protection guide everything we do. As a child safe organisation, we align with the National Child Safe Principles and are committed to creating environments where every child is safe, respected, inspired and nurtured to grow with confidence. Safeguarding the Sparrow Way means protecting children from harm, prioritising their wellbeing, and ensuring they are surrounded by adults who are present, aware, and responsive.
We maintain a strong child protection culture across all services. Children’s rights, voice, and personal safety are embedded in our daily practice, and every team member understands their responsibilities as mandatory reporters – including recognising signs of harm and acting immediately on any concern. Protecting children is a shared responsibility, upheld with vigilance and care.
We focus on preventing harm through strong supervision, proactive risk management, clear policy frameworks, and ongoing training. Should an incident or concern arise, we prioritise the child’s immediate safety, follow legislative requirements, and maintain transparent communication with families and authorities. We review incidents and near misses to continually strengthen our practices.

Every team member undergoes comprehensive background checks, verification of qualifications, reference screening, and ongoing compliance monitoring to ensure they meet our expectations as a child safe organisation. We select educators not only for their skills, but for their integrity, professionalism, and alignment with our values.
